What DOES a Doula do?

Doula is a Greek word meaning “ woman’s servant.” In our context it means a professional who provides support to a woman who is pregnant, in labor , and early post partum.  At 1000 Praises, we can also provide support for post- operative clients, who simply need company or help around the house.  We are not a home healthcare service, but provide light housekeeping and light meals, and a “safety net” an able bodied person who can call for help should the need arise.

Support:

A Doula will provide you with continuous care during labor and delivery. Unlike the L&D nurses, she does not have mandated breaks, or a shift change.  She will supply you with emotional and physical support from early labor through the birth of your child. With a Doula you are significantly less likely to require a c-section. Many women who hire Doulas are less likely to need an epidural.  A Doula helps you trust your body.  A Doula helps you trust your own judgement.

Education:

All of the Doulas at 1000 Praises Doula Service are either DONA certified, or have completed a DONA qualifying training course and are working toward their certification. Doulas in training are available at significantly reduced fees. Our Doulas are able to help you educate yourself about pregnancy and childbirth, so that you can navigate the sometimes confusing  risks and options available to you while in labor.
